Colour Schemes and Emotion in Art

For the first part of the session we talked about different colour schemes (warm, cold, complementary and analogous). We looked at some paintings by famous painters such as Edvard Munch, Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh and Claude Monet. The children then had a go at colouring in some pattern paper with a specific colour scheme in mind

For the second part of the session we talked about how certain colours can make you think of a particular emotion such as Picasso’s ‘The Tragedy’ using lots of blue to give a feeling of sadness. The children felt that colours emotional meaning could be very different depending on the person and some emotions felt more like a mix of different colours. Red for angry and blue for sad were the only colour associations they agreed with. They made each made a diagram of emotions and used the colours they thought matched particular emotions in each labelled segment. After they noted that the type of marks you make on paper could affect the emotion portrayed, so they each tried representing a different emotion on the opposite page.

Next week we are going to have a go at drawing some portraits using pencils.

Printing & Placemat Making

We have been very busy today! The first thing we did was test out our printing pads we made last week. We put paint on the pads and then placed them on paper, next we pushed down on them for a few seconds before lifting them up and seeing the result! One of the children used both their printing pads in order to make a print with lots of layers.

After we finished testing our printing pads we made some placemats by doing some vegetable printing on paper and then laminating them (after drying the paint). Everyone had the most fun with the sweetcorn, especially using it to mix colours!

Next week we are going to draw and use different materials to make a garden collage!

Colour Wheel

For our first session the children chose a sketchbook each to use every week. It was a tough choice with all the lovely covers to choose from!
Once this was sorted everyone had their own palette with red, blue and yellow paint. To begin with they put the primary colours on their colour wheel, followed by mixing and adding the secondary colours. After this step we talked about tertiary colours and how to make them (mixing a primary colour with a secondary colour). Finally we learnt how to make colour black and brown.
During the last quarter of the lessons the children drew and painted something of their choice using what we learnt in the first half.

Next week we are going to learn about colour schemes and how people use colour to represent feelings.

Ready for Tomorrow!

Tomorrow will be our first session for the 10-13 year old class!
This class is going to be more focused on developing artistic knowledge and skills, although we will still have plenty of time for experimentation and exploration like the 4-9 year old class!
We’ve brought a selection of nice sketchbooks for the students to choose theirs from and I thought I’d share a few of them on this post.

D.I.Y Nature Printing Pads

This week we made some D.I.Y. nature printing pads using flowers, leaves, cardboard and glue!
Some of us made pretty patterns and some of us made pictures, most of us thought that the flower petals were the best material to use!
The printing pads will be dry next week so we are going to use them to make our own prints!
We are also going to try some vegetable printing as well. We are thinking about trying to make our own book marks and placemats with our D.I.Y. prints.

Valentine’s Hearts

Today we made some 3D Valentine’s Day hearts out of wool!
Everyone did an amazing job carefully wrapping the wool around the cardboard heart lots of times. Next we thought about what we could do with heart, resulting in some interesting ideas like flowers, necklaces, hanging decoration and a microphone!
Some of us also tried doing some sewing following a line. It was a bit tricky with the fabric we used so we will use felt next time.
Next time we are going to make some nature stamps using cardboard and different plants!

Painting with Plants

Today we have been experimenting with using different parts of several different plants to paint some pictures. We had daffodils, snowdrops, fir tree leaves, dried poppy seed pods, buddleia, strawberry leaves and dried rudbeckia flower heads. Everyone chose their own colours and what plants they wanted to use. The daffodils were the most popular tool! Their stems were really good for making lines and the petals could make a variety of interesting marks depending on how you use them.
Whilst we were painting we found a caterpillar on one of the leaves! Everyone enjoyed looking at our surprise visitor before we took him outside to a nearby tree.

Next week we are going to make some 3D wool hearts, I wonder what we could make with them? Magic wands? Window charms? Or maybe a 3D card!

Painting our Clay Sculptures

Today we had lots of fun painting our clay sculptures we made last week!
Not only did we have different coloured acrylic paint for painting our clay models, but we also had some special sparkly metallic acrylic paints to try too! Everyone had lots of fun being creative with how we chose to add a splash of colour to our sculptures!
We also had a new friend today who made an awesome bearded dragon out of clay.

Next week we are going to be exploring mark making with plants. We are going to use flowers, stems and leaves as painting tools. I wonder what everyone will decide to paint?

Clay Modelling Animals

This week we have been using clay to make 3D sculptures of different animals.
We started off by squishing and squeezing the clay to warm it up, then we thought about what we wanted to make. We used our hands, a rolling pin and different mark making tools to help us make our animals!
Next week when they are dry we are going to paint them using acrylic paint.

Animal Portraits

Today we have been using what we learnt about colour mixing last week to draw and paint some amazing animals!
We had some books with photos of animals to help inspire us whilst we decided what animal portraits to do. Everyone had lots of fun choosing and even more painting!
We hope you enjoy looking through our animal portrait gallery.
Next week we are going to make some animals out of clay, I wonder what animal each person will chose to make?
