Felt Bookmarks and Finishing off Plushies

This week our 4-9 year old groups created their very own felt bookmarks, whilst some of the children who came on Monday finished off their felt plush.
The children drew a picture of what they would like to go on their bookmark before using a dressmakers chalk pencil to draw the shapes on the felt and cut them out. They enjoyed coming up with different ideas for the designs and one the children created a front and back design.

The three children who finished off their plushies worked diligently and did a fantastic job finishing off their sewing, gluing and stuffing. Primrose Art Club will now be off for two weeks for the summer holidays, we will see you in September.

Press Painting Insects and Houses

This week the toddler group are going to explore press painting. Instead of just the usual butterflies used in early press painting exploration we decided to also have some ladybirds and houses available for the children to choose from.

We tried out using paint brushes and squeezing the paint from the bottle directly onto the paper. The children’s favourite part was squishing the paper together and then pulling it apart, especially when we squeezed the paint directly from the bottle as they could see the paint move as they squished it.

Primrose Art Club will now be closed for two weeks for the summer holidays, se everyone in September.

Exploring 3D Cardboard Art

Our exploration of 3D art has continued this week with cardboard and foil. We created the cardboard art first and then the foil sculptures during the last quarter of the session. The children also had access to all other art materials we have in our stores.
The first challenge they were given was to create a piece of 3D art using cardboard and the topic and other materials were free choice. We ended up with some unique pieces; a mini diorama, a bed sculpture, a hand painted standing cardboard cut-out minion and a Demogorgon head.
During the last part of the session the children had fun making some simple tin foil sculptures (heart, bear and microphone). They enjoyed adding the layers of foil and squishing it into the shapes they needed.
Next week we will be exploring creating 3D art with clay and sewing.

‘Drawing with Scissors’

This week our 4-9 year olds had lots of fun exploring creating 3D paper art using different coloured paper, scissors and sticky pads. While initially hesitant the children became more confident and found the process of creating 3D paper art more enjoyable as they added more layers and experimented with the different shaped scissors. One of the children said making 3D paper art was like drawing with scissors.
Next week we are going to try making some felt bookmarks.

Fizzy Painting

This week the children had lots of fun exploring fizzy painting. To make a fizzy painting you need bicarbonate of soda, plastic cups, distilled vinegar, food colouring, pipettes and water colour paper.
The first thing we did was mix food colouring with the distilled vinegar (the red, pink and orange look very similar in colour on the photo). We then sprinkled bicarbonate of soda on top of our watercolour paper.

Next using the pipettes we added the colourful vinegar to the bicarbonate of soda. We watched it fizz and the colours mix as more were added.

Finally the children had lots of fun experimenting with paint brushes and seeing if they could change and manipulate the fizzy art by using the paint brush splatter method for adding vinegar or mixing the bicarbonate of soda round their paper.

Next week we will be making some press paintings.

Natural Dyes Workshop

Today we had lots of fun exploring some of the natural dyes we can make using vegetables and berries that we can buy from the shops. We used red cabbage, blackberries, spinach and turmeric to make our dyes.

We actually used the red cabbage to make three different colours thanks to a fun from science experiment! The dye we made boiling the cabbage for three hours was purple, when the children added bicarbonate of soda to the dye it turned green. They also experimented with adding lemon juice to the dye which turned it red. The colour of the dye is affected by how acidic or alkaline the solution is!

For the turmeric and blackberries we mashed them up and added water to form a colour paste. The turmeric made yellow and the blackberries made a dark red. With the spinach we soaked it in boiled water for 20 minutes to make green.

After we made the dyes everyone then started painting our amazing flags.

The flags were still wet so we’ve popped them up to dry and will give everyone their flags back next week.

Exploring 3D Paper Art

This week our Friday group had lots of fun exploring creating 3D paper art using paper, scissors, googly eyes and foam sticky pads. One of the children described 3D paper art as ‘drawing with scissors’. They enjoyed using vibrantly coloured paper and trying to figure out whether it is better to stick pieces down as you go or to cut out all the pieces first, fit them together like a jigsaw puzzle and then stick them together. They had access to both straight edge and shaped scissors which helped create some of the interesting textures.
Next week we will be exploring creating 3D art using corrugated cardboard.

Mixed Media Art Based On Our Holidays

This week the Wednesday and Thursday groups were tasked with creating pictures based on their holidays using two or more different materials. The children had access to washi tape, pencils, chalk pastels, oil pastels, water colour paint, collage materials, pens and colouring pencils.
We ended up with quite a few pictures based on holidays in Cornwall!
The chalk and oil pastels were very popular this week and the children who used them were a lot more experimental, using different tools to smudge them and also exploring what happens if you mix the two together or add water to the former.
Next week we are going to explore creating 3D art with just paper and sticky foam squares.

Bubble Painting

This week the toddlers had lots of fun exploring bubble painting! We mixed paint with washing up liquid and a small amount of water, we then used sponges to mark make on the paper!
We had the little Crayola paint pots so it was easy to add extra colours to our palette trays and see what happens when we only partially mix colours. The bubbly textures were lots of fun! We even tried popping the bubbles!
During the last fifteen minutes we all worked together to make one big picture with the bubble paint and finished it off with three of us making prints with the empty paint pots, whilst another child made an awesome tower by stacking the lids.
Next week we are going to try out fizzy painting!

Clay Modelling Summer Session

This weeks extra summer session was focused on exploring what we can create via clay modelling. During the first half of the session everyone created their very own mosaic coaster using beads and clay, while in the second half the children had the opportunity to create whatever they wanted.
We have ended up with some vibrant coasters and fantastically creative clay creations including: clay animal ornaments (including a bear based this penny bear), a trophy, letter ‘M’, mermaid, ornaments which can be threaded with string and hung up once dry, flowers, Luna Lovegood’s glasses, a vase and Steve from Minecraft.
