Textured Beach Paintings

This week our Wednesday and Thursday Groups had lots of fun exploring what textures they can create with paint. They used different tools such as palette knives, feathers, four different sponges, pom-poms, sand, plastic needles, forks, cardboard, string and buttons.
The most popular tools were the sponges and palette knives. The children quickly realised they could further alter texture by changing how they used a particular tool, such as dabbing vs scrapping a sponge along the paper.
Next week we will continue exploring the idea of texture by creating some mixed media art.

Splat Painting!

Today our toddler group had lots of fun exploring gravity through splat painting!
We rolled out a large piece of paper and placed trays of paint and different objects around the paper. We had plastic eggs, feathers, four different sponges, spaghetti, buttons, shells, pipe cleaners, socks, beaded necklaces, beaded bracelets, cotton reels and two chunky plastic diamonds. The children agreed that the spaghetti was their favourite to use.
Half way through the session the children started exploring the paint with their hands and feet, they enjoyed patting the paper with their paint covered hands and walking on the paper. We even ended up jumping on the paper at one point! (with grown-ups holding hands to prevent slipping)
Next week we will be exploring bubble painting!

Bead and Button Creatures

During our first summer holidays extra session the children had a go at creating animals using beads and buttons! We used pipe cleaners as the material they threaded beads onto so that they could bend the pipe cleaners into the shapes they needed. There was also some googly eyes available which ended up making the creatures look incredibly cute. Everyone seemed to love making butterflies, spiders, snakes and caterpillars! We had a few other creatures such as a dog, duck (made with cord instead of pipe cleaners) and snail.

Magizoologist’s Field Sketchbooks part 2

This week the Friday group created their magical creature pictures for our display, some of the children practiced a few ideas in their sketchbook first before creating their final piece. They created their magical beasts by combining different real animals using some animal encyclopaedias we had available to look through as inspiration. Some of the children also thought about mythological whilst creating their creatures. Birds ended up being a very popular source of inspiration for everyone.
Most of the children are on holiday next week so we will have a more casual session to finish off a couple of pieces to add to the display.

Seashell Observational Drawings

This week our 4-9 year old groups were given the task of looking at some real shells and drawing them. They had the choice of pencils, pastels, charcoal and drawing pens. Initially everyone was fascinated by the shells and enjoyed looking at the different textures (in particular the smoothness of some vs the roughness of others) before settling on which shell to start drawing.
Everyone displayed amazing attention to detail and took note of the shapes they could see in the shells, they also all did a brilliant job drawing the shells from different perspectives and trying to make them look 3D. A couple of the children add extra things to their shell pictures, one child turned their picture into a beach picture and the other into a seaside café sign.

Next week we will be exploring creating texture with paint whilst making a seaside picture.

Foam Painting

This week the Toddler group had lots of fun trying out foam marble painting with water colour paint. The children enjoyed spreading the foam in their tray, using a pipette to add colour and stirring everything together with a chop stick and then making a print on the paper. Unfortunately the foam print did not work very well with water colour paint but we ended up having lots of fun exploring mark making with water colours. We tried tapping the brush with another to make splatter drops and using different brushes to make different lines! Time went super fast and everyone had so much fun testing out the different tools and colours.
Next week we are going to try out splat painting!

Magizoologist’s Field Sketchbooks

Continuing on with the Harry Potter theme our Friday group pretended to be magizoologists discovering new magical creatures within the world of Harry Potter. We ended up with a mixture of horror inspired creatures, a medusa, an Egyptian art styled bird/human hybrid, an octofly and a chimera with a lions head, goose wings and orangutan body. The children used pencil to sketch their creations, watercolour paint to add colour to them and drawing pens to add detail and strengthen outlines.

Next week we will be continuing with creating magical creatures and will create some to go on the display outside the classroom.

Exploring Mark Making in Playdough and Clay

This week the Toddler group had lots of fun exploring mark making with different tools in playdough and making some clay art to take home using the mark making techniques they tried out with the playdough.

Testing out mark making with feathers, shells and some of the stone jewellery was lots of fun! It was interesting seeing what impressions they left behind. Some of the playdough had turmeric, coriander and paprika mixed in, everyone enjoyed smelling them.

During the second part of the session we focused on creating art with clay utilising the techniques we explored during the first half. Rolling, squishing, pressing and cutting the clay into the right shapes was hard work and lots of fun. The necklace made better impression marks in the clay than it did in the playdough and as a result was very popular.

Next week we are going to explore foam marble painting.

Jellyfish Wind-Charms

This week our 4-9 year old groups have had lots of fun making their own jellyfish wind-charms using old yogurt pots, threading cord and pony beads. The first task for everyone was to decide if they wanted to make a repeating pattern or randomised colours, the older children overall preferred making patterns whilst the younger children wanted to get as many different colours on their jellyfish’s tentacles as possible. Everyone spent a lot of care and attention to threading the beads and enjoyed discussing where they would hang their jellyfish at home. The majority wished to hang theirs in their bedroom, with one child telling us about their sea themed bedroom and how the jellyfish can hang on a shelf next to their cuddly jellyfish.

Wednesday’s group made the jellyfish above and Thursday’s group made the jellyfish below.

Next week we will be practicing our observational skills by drawing some shells.
